John Rutan is the Chief Medical Officer/Corporate Medical Director of a large major steel manufacturer in North America where he oversees workplace health and safety. His responsibilities comprise post-offer, pre-employment physical exams, injury care, substance testing, and OSHA mandated surveillance medical exams. He has the clinical oversight of all the in-house Integrated Disability Case Management (STD, LTD, occupational and non-occupational) and is the determinant of fitness-for-duty for the employee population. He is clinically integral to the management of high cost claimant accounts for the national health care insurer. He is a National Registry of Certified Medical Examiner (NRCME) member approved for DOT mandated exams by the FMCSA.

 

In his role, he negotiates contracts and manages five different occupational medical contracted companies at sixteen different locations. He is responsible for developing treatment and procedural protocols for these companies. Accordingly, he manages seven different budgets.

 

His experience includes over 25 years working as an Occupational Medicine Physician and Medical Review Officer (MRO) with Medical Directorship(s). Industries include all types of manufacturing, chemical, trucking (DOT), and health care. He functions as the Director of Employee Health for the largest extended care senior living community in the region.

Additional expertise and duties encompass OSHA 300 Log recordkeeping management, FMLA, ADA, and developing the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) with the outside vendor.

 

Dr. Rutan has been instrumental in the COVID-19 pandemic at the corporate level driving policy to ensure a safe workforce. He functions as a travel medicine consultant for the corporate executives and is currently developing an employee focused initiative for Obesity as the primary driver for Wellness.
